Male Treatment Table

Saw Palmetto

Herbal

Numerous laboratory, animal, and human studies have been done to test the

effectiveness of saw palmetto for BPH. In general, results have been positive

- possibly due to saw palmetto's potential ability to block at least partially the

effects of an enzyme that promotes and maintains prostate cell growth.

In general, while using saw palmetto seemed to help relieve the symptoms of

BPH for humans, it had little or no effect on prostate size.

It also showed no effects on blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a

protein that is produced by prostate cancer cells. Because PSA circulates in

the blood, it can be tested easily to determine if prostate enlargement is

caused by cancer.

Take 320mg daily.  Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using

this product.

Selenium

Nutritional

In one of the largest and well-controlled studies (Taylor et al. 1994), 200mcg of selenium was found to reduce the risk of several cancers, including cancer of the prostate (66%), colon (50%) and lung (40%) when compared to a group receiving a placebo. Selenium supplementation was also found to reduce the total morality, mortality from all cancers combined, incidence of all three cancers combined, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and prostate cancer (Combs et al., 1997).

Take 200mcg per day. Never take more than 400mcg of Selenium per day. Pregnant women should not take more than 60mcg per day.

Zinc

Nutritional

Taking zinc 20 mg daily for an average of 8 years reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men with normal PSA levels.

Take 20mg per day. Never take more than 100mg of zinc per day.

Vitamin E

Nutritional

Several large-scale randomized, controlled trials also provide conflicting evidence. In a large-scale study of 29,133 smokers, patients taking 50 mg/day of all-rac-alpha-tocopherol (synthetic vitamin E) alone, or in combination with beta-carotene, had a significantly lower incidence of prostate cancer and mortality associated with prostate cancer; however, the group of patients from this study who developed prostate cancer tended to have lower levels of serum alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol compared to controls.

Take 50IU to 100IU per day. Do not take more than 1500IU per day. If you are taking blood thinning medication, like warfarin, avoid using vitamin E.

Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium)

Herbal

The glycosides in epimedium might have hormonal effects. Animal research suggests that epimedium promotes semen secretion and stimulates growth of prostate, testes, and anus rector muscles. Some researchers think it might increase testosterone secretion. Epimedium causes vasodilation, possibly by blocking calcium channels. It also seems to have hypotensive effects, possibly by catecholamine blockade.

For impotence, take 500mg daily. Avoid using if you suffer from low blood pressure. If you have a history of hormaonal imbalances avoid using this product. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using Epimedium. If you are using blood thinning medication, avoid using Epimedium.
