Melatonin

Nutritional

Melatonin is a hormone produce by the pineal gland in the brain. It is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan (tryptophan can also be converted into serotonin and the serotonin converted into melatonin). Melatonin levels are lowest during midday (and subsequent to sunlight exposure) and production peaks at night (typically 2-4 AM). In some animals, melatonin is necessary for regulation of light/dark cycle behavior like sleeping/waking and sexual maturation. In animals, melatonin seems to help regulate seasonal behaviors (mating, molting, hibernation), which are related to daily light/dark cycles. In humans, melatonin helps regulate our "internal clock". The onset of darkness results in an increased production of melatonin in the brain, while the light of morning tells the brain to stop producing melatonin. Melatonin levels are 10 times higher at night than during the day (instead of at night). Dietary supplements containing melatonin are generally used for promoting sleep, reducing insomnia, reducing the symptoms of jet-lag. Numerous claims for melatonin supplements exist for its preliminary effects as an antioxidant, anti-cancer adjunct, and anti-aging agent. Interestingly, melatonin has been found in other herbal remedies, such as St. John’s wort flower, green feverfew leaves, and skullcap. It may be obtained by extraction from pineal glands of cattle or chemical synthesis in the laboratory from 5-methoxyindole. The synthetic form is available from numerous manufacturers and is preferred over animal-derived supplements.

For insomnia take 1 capsule, 30 minutes before bed. For jet-lag take 1 capsule 30 minutes before bedtime on arrival at your destination and continue for 3 days.  Melatonin has contraceptive properties, therefore women looking to fall pregnant should avoid using melatonin. Individuals under the age of 18 years should not use Melatonin. Epileptics should avoid using Melatonin. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using this product.

5-HTP

Amino Acid

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is related to both L-tryptophan and serotonin. In the body L-tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP, which can then be converted to serotonin. 5-HTP readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases central nervous system (CNS) synthesis of serotonin. Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior, and pain sensation. Serotonin also has a significant role in depression, anxiety, and aggression. Since 5-HTP can increase synthesis of serotonin, 5-HTP is used for several disease states where serotonin is believed to play a significant role including depression, insomnia, obesity, and numerous other conditions.

Take 1 capsule, 30 minutes before bed.  Contact your healthcare practitioner if you are using anti-depressant medication, before using this product. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using this product.

Valerian

Herbal

As a mild tranquilizer and sleep aid, valerian may be an effective herb for dealing with temporary feelings of anxiety, nervousness or insomnia. The effects of valerian are generally quite mild when compared to prescription products and synthetic OTC products and generally do not result in “morning after hangover” effects experienced with certain sleep aids.

Take 1 capsule  30 minutes before bed. If you are taking sedatives, use valerian with caution. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using this product.
