Alcohol consumption is linked to cancer

Background In 1997 the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) part of the American Inst. for Cancer Research, published a report called: Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective Based on feedback from this original report the WCRF set out in 2001 to read, review and assess as the body of published evidence on the relationships between cancer, diet and physical activity. We have all felt the frustration of hearing or reading that “such and such” causes cancer only to hear a few months later that it was wrong and some or other research has proved that it does not! Everywhere you go people drop little pieces of health advice gleaned from one or other of the thousands of research articles that come out each month about cancer, diet and exercise. So these guys bravely set out to read and digest all this stuff and based on the findings of a number of specialist working groups they would make some generalized advice that we could all follow. (They eventually selected and studied 7 000 reports out of a possible 500 000 written since the sixties)

2nd Report October 2007 They have just released their second comprehensive report. "This report is a real milestone in the fight against cancer, because its recommendations represent the most definitive advice on preventing cancer that has ever been available anywhere in the world," said Professor Martin Wiseman, project director of the report. This is very different from reading a snippet of health news and making a health related decision based on a few lines of summary! We strongly recommend that you read, absorb and act on these recommendations as opposed to the random sound bites that you may hear from well meaning individuals in the offices, gyms and other places.
